About the DeTomaso Marque

Alejandro De Tomaso arrived in Italy at the end of the fifties and in October 1959 founded the factory in Modena which was named after him. From the beginning he manufactured cars that featured original, creative and technical solutions.

The first car that De Tomaso built was a 1500cc Formula 2, built at the end of 1959. The chassis had a tubular frame, with a DOCH 4 cylinder 1500cc OSCA engine. After the Formula 2, De Tomaso built a Formula Junior ISI powered by a 1100cc engine derived from the Ford engine and modified by Holbay.

1962 was a very busy year for DeTomaso Automobili. After first building a Formula 1 with a tubular frame and powered by an Alfa Romeo engine, they then built a sports car equipped with a OSCA 1100 cc engine which won every race it entered. This was followed by a sports car powered by a OSCA 1500 cc engine, and then a Formula 1 car with a flat 8 cylinder engine. This car entered the 1962 Grand Prix at Monza.

At the end of the year, DeTomaso produced a "monoposto" Formula Junior equipped with a monolithic chassis using a magnesium fused monocoque body and an engine based on the Ford 1100cc. Among other victories, this car won the Italian Hill Climbing Championship. After these achievements in the racing field DeTomaso shifted it's interests to the sports car, building spiders and coupes such as the Valllunga, the Mangusta and the Pompero.

The Pantera was born in 1969. When it was introduced to the public in the 1970's, it was a huge success and subsequent versions remained in production until 1994. The last Pantera design -- the fourth generation so to speak -- was the Nuevo 200, redesigned from front to back by the famous designer, Marcello Gandini, who created an exciting update while still retaining some of the unique forms Tom Tjaarda's original design had in 1971.

The Guara

In March 1993, DeTomaso presented the new Guara at the Geneva Motor Show.

Drawing on all the past experiences, the Guara combined the most modern construction technology in the world: a central tubular chassis with sandwich construction (aluminium honeycomb), independent upper and lower wishbone with pushrod front and read end suspension, petrol tank positioned inside the central tubular frame, and a composite material body. The cars characteristic traits are its high performance, its light weight and its excellent handling, whether destined for road or competition use.

After the initial "Barchetta" version, DeTomaso began manufacturing the Guara coupe, a car with muscular and aggressive lines although not ostentatious. Much meticulous work gave birth to the production of this extremely fast car with exceptional road holding and equipped with a refined 2 seater cockpit entirely finished in high quality leather.

The central tubular chassis which divides the occupants accentuates the cockpit effect, an effect which is reproduced externally by the domed shaped roof. These characteristics underline the sportive vocation and performance of the Guara.

Carbon fibre composite materials have been widely used in the construction of the Guara, this has helped keep the car extremely light (under 1200kg) without

being detrimental to the strength and rigidity of the body, which in crash testing has easily surpassed all the security provisions. The new anatomical seats are supplied with the normal 3 point or the more supportive 4 point racing seats belts.

There is now a new range of DeTomaso colours. Apart from the traditional DeTomaso blue there is also, red, yellow, dark blue, dark green, black, silver and white. The standard DeTomaso Guara consists of: anti-theft, central locking, air conditioning, leather seats and electric windows. Additional extras include: personalised interior and clients choice of external colours and metallic finish.

The Guara is a sports car of high performance, with a chassis and suspension of a real racing car, avant guard technologies, and a G.T. cockpit.
